Shenzhen Wine and Cheese Club Celebrates 8 Years

November marked the 8th anniversary of the Shenzhen Wine and Cheese Club. Members attend the wine and cheese club to mix fun, networking and business once a month on a Saturday evening.

Club Overview and History
The club came about when a group of expats decided that there was no gathering or event that is precisely catered to their taste, where they can enjoy wines, cheese and the company of like-minded people. So on November 2003, the club was born. The club is run by a group of advisors who are responsible for selecting the wines, the cheese and the venue.

Original founders were Grace and Mike Granlund who did an excellent job to get the Shenzhen expat community together to enjoy what was then rare treats at the time: Imported Wine and Imported cheese. Back in the early days the couple would smuggle cheese across the border from Hong Kong to satisfy the members cravings. Early events were held at the Four Points by Sheraton and the Grand Mercure Oriental Ginza.

It used to be that wine and cheese were scarce in Shenzhen and the club was one of the few places to get it. Now the club acts as a filter to recommend the best wine and cheese that have come flooding the Chinese market.

Who Will You Meet at Club Events and Where are Events Held
Attendees of the events are a great mix of old Shenzhen hands and new arrivals. Each event gathers over 60 people come from all parts of Shenzhen to check out the new restaurants and hotels and mingle with the Shenzhen elite.

The October event was held at the top fo the Galleon Restaurant and Bar where attendees watched the nightly fireworks from the Windows of the World.

Everyone wears a name tag so it is really easy to slip into conversation and  you don’t have to worry if you forgot someones name from the last event. The crowd comes from all over including Food & Beverage Industry professionals such as Hotel General Mangers, wine suppliers and restaurant owners. Wine enthusiasts also show up such as local and overseas Chinese, expat business men and women or husband and wives that just want to leave the kids at home for a night on the town. It is on a Saturday so it is easy to find a babysitter and come out for the night.

And with the help of allied partners (suppliers and hotels), the club has been growing in membership. The club works with wine importers throughout China to get special wines from around the world.
